Ska-punks the Pilfers emerged from the remnants of a series of noted New York City bands -- frontman Coolie Ranx served with the Toasters, trombonist Vinny Nobile tenured with Bim Skala Bim, guitarist Nick Bacon was a member of the Erratics, and bassist Anna Milat-Meyer and drummer James Blanck previously teamed in Skinnerbox. Formed in 1997 following Ranx's exit from the Toasters, the Pilfers built a loyal fanbase on the strength of a seemingly endless tour schedule including stints opening for the likes of Bad Brains, the Specials, Madness and the Mighty Mighty Bosstones, selling over 10,000 copies of their self-released eponymous 1998 debut at live shows and on the internet. Signing to Mojo Records, the Pilfers released Chawalaleng in 1999. -All Music
Tsunami Rising formed in the winter of 2003 as a three piece act playing punk, reggae and ska around the Jersey and Philly scenes. A new singer in 2005 brought new energy and influences of rock and hip hop to the group and the evolution of their sound has been evident since. The band began to develop their niche in the local music scene playing Atlantic City and Philadelphia regularly while expanding to New York’s the Knitting Factory, Asbury Park’s Stone Pony, Philly’s North Star Bar, Trocadero and more. In January 2007 Tsunami Rising organized their first East Coast tour to promote 2 self released albums and has been hitting the road often since. Since, the band has toured both coasts and is continuously playing regionally.
The addition of a new guitarist in 2009 has added a progressive touch to the Tsunami style.
Tsunami Rising continues to grow as individuals and as a band bringing their style of conscious reggae-rock along with their strong message to listeners all over.
Karen Gibson Roc is an astonishment. This Brooklyn-based (by way of Jamaica and Canada) poet and musician is fierce and fearless. A musical chameleon (she calls herself a "poetist" or poetic vocalist), she combines elements of rap, downtown-diva poetry slamming, with an urgent backing band.
Karen Gibson Roc has been dazzling audiences for the better part of ten years. She has played in some of NYC's most desired venues; From The Whitney Museum and The Brooklyn Academy of Music to the famed C.B.G.B's gallery before its doors closed.
A reviewer of one of her live performances once came to the conclusion that Gibson Roc must have something to do with the preservation of the universe. She has been compared to Gil Scott-Heron, although she is not as political as Scott-Heron was. She is a sloganeer as he was, but in a more personal mode.
She is currently working on her upcoming new 'LIVE' project entitled 'THE COOL OF THE DAY' a combination of jazz, hip hop, world sounds..an ecclectic melting pot of musical elements that she has come to know and love!
Across The Aisle is a New York City-based band with ska, pop, punk and reggae influences. ATA began when lead singer Megg Howe, from Lowell, MA, convinced her friend and fellow singer/actor Jay Pintar, originally from MI, to dust off his trumpet and start a band. Drummers and bassists came and went, but eventually the rhythm section solidified with drummer Jonathan "J.V." Vergara, the only band member actually from NYC, and bassist Ashray Shah, from northern CA. Alto saxophonist Jackie Chasen, of Orange, CT. filled out the horn section in the spring of ’08. Their current guitarist is Jesse Gosselin, formerly of Sgt. Scagnetti. Musical influences include everything from The Clash, Spring Heeled Jack, Squirrel Nut Zippers, to The Drifters, No Doubt & The Beatles. Under a banner of kelly green, this band is looking to add some color and take ska from two-tone to three-tone!
